Between Monument Peak and Freel Peak: High Meadows

High Meadows

An open landscape with shades of yellow, brown and green featuring dispersed trees (September 14, 2019)

High Meadows sits somewhere between Lake Tahoe's surface level and the Carson Range rim. Compared to the tops of the Carson Range peaks surrounding High Meadows, its level terrain is at a lower altitude. Compared to South Lake Tahoe, the meadows are situated about 1,400 feet (427 m) higher. Coming up, for example, along the scenic Cold Creek Trail, you have some workout to do to get to this beautiful mountain meadow. Depending on your condition, you may want to move on and High Meadows will just be your gateway to Tahoe Rim Trail sites such as Monument Pass, Star Lake or the Freel Peak area.

High Meadows collects precipitation and snowmelt from the Carson Range mountains located north, east and south of the meadow. The water drains off eastward. The meadow area is part of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU).
