Hidden within the Carson Range: Star Lake

Star Lake

The blue-gree waters of alpine Star Lake, eastern California

Alpine Star Lake is located at the base of Jobs Sister in the Carson Range. This hemlock-ringed lake along the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) between Kingsbury South and Big Meadow is one of the very few lakes in the upper part of the east Lake Tahoe Basin. Hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians know it as a year round source of water. On a hot summer day you may see people swimming in the lake. Backpackers will find a few campsites in the Star Lake area—a gateway for those who plan to climb nearby Freel Peak, with 10,881 ft (3,316 m) the tallest peak of the Carson Range, slightly taller than Mount Rose.
