UNR's “N” north of Rancho San Rafael

Nevada N

Maintained and painted by UNR (University of Nevada, Reno) students: rocks arranged to form the letter “N” with added serifs

You can't miss it. Heading west on N McCarran Blvd. from its intersection with N Virginia St or being at your leisure in Rancho San Rafael Park, you will see the letter “N”—slab-serif-typefaced—on a hillside in the lower landscape southeast of Peavine Mountain. The four-mile-long Thorton Loop Trail is roughly encircling the Nevada “N” and their is an across-trail to the letter's baseline. My favorite hike up to the “N” is across Evans Creek from the Basque Sheepherder Monument near the Reno Softball Complex. The panoramic views of the mountain ranges around Truckee Meadows are worth the climb. And the views are even getting better when you continue all the way to the top: to Thorton Point with its rock outcrops crowning the “N” site. The localwiki page with the title “Hike to the N” has the following advice:
It is highly encouraged to go on this hike around sunrise and sunset when the views are really breathtaking.
And arriving with improper shoes, the straight-uphill climb over slippery gravel is breathtaking as well.
