Breaking free in Boston

Resonance 2019

Barn swallows juxtaposing Boston's cityscape

Glass cloches are typically used to protect or showcase objects of rarity or curiosity. Whatever is protected and trapped under such a glass bell, it is not really part of the vibrant outside world—until the confining glass wall is cracked and opens up its surroundings. Here, geographically, this outside world is the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway in Boston, a public park bending north-south through downtown and harbor neighborhoods. The oversize barn swallows in pursuit of freedom can't be missed by following the greenbelt north of Boston's South Station. The monumental mural, a latex and spray paint, has the title Resonance. It was created by the artist Super A (Stefan Thelen):
Super A is known for his hyper-realist and ethereal depictions of metaphorical narratives. Juxtaposing real and surreal figures, Super A's work creates a strong critique of global and social issues. In exploring his work, we are often confronted with the challenge, or even facade, of individual liberty in the face of injustice and oppression.
Located next to the Dewey Demonstration Gardens, the magnified, yet realistic looking birds create a visually appealing scenery in a somewhat surreal environment of flowers, shattered glass and high rises—worth to be explored and reflected upon any time of the year.
