Whaler's Cove, where seabirds find a banquet of sea life in the waters surrounding Prisoner Rock
Around the Pigeon Point Light Station peninsula you will find various coves dotted with rocks and pinnacles. The Whaler's Cove Overlook—only a short walk away from the State Park entrance—is a great place to watch cove life and scan the coastline between Pigeon Point and Año Nuevo. Stroll along cliffside trails to get changing views of Whaler's Cove, its beaches and rock islands. There also is an informative panel that encourage you to spot animals around the cove's signature feature, Prisoner Rock:
The rocky island in Whaler's Cove is called Prisoner Rock because
fishermen were often trapped there by high tides. Seabirds stop
to rest and enjoy a banquet of sea life in the surrounding waters.
Shorebirds hunt for food in the tidepools. Look closely to spot
seals hauled out on the rocks.
