Overlooking Sand Harbor

Sand Harbor peninsula with its famed sandy beach, boardwalks and the open-air Shakespeare Festival theater

Once a harbor receiving and advancing trees logged around Lake Tahoe, Sand Harbor today is a recreational hotspot on the Nevada side of the lake. To overlook Sand Harbor, as in the picture above, one needs to hike the Sand Harbor Overlook Loop trail—also known as Christopher's Loop spur trail. This trail allows for a short sidetrip off the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT), along which one can access the granite cliff edge of Herlan Peak (8840 ft., 2694 m). Not only the bird's-eye view of Sand Harbor is breathtaking, also the vistas of almost every corner of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding mountain ranges make it worth to visit this overlook point.
